COURTNEY MARIN, LAc

Courtney_b_w.jpg

Courtney Marin is a Licensed Acupuncturist and lives in Portland, Oregon. Her expertise is rooted in the Nagano-Matsumoto lineage of acupuncture. This approach is hands-on and uses abdominal reflexes for primary diagnosis. A reflex is an area that connects to an organ, meridian, or body part and acts as a doorway in for acupuncture strategies. Other modalities used in her treatments are moxa and cupping.  What to expect.

Attracted to alternative disciplines from an early age, Courtney traveled several times to India to delve deeply into the path of Yoga. She spent over a decade teaching Hatha Yoga. Her curiosity of the body and subtle energies led her to practicing bodywork for over twenty years. Courtney’s work in these professions cultivated a refined sense of feeling through her hands, and a keen ability to communicate with the body.

Courtney graduated from Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, California in 2013 with a Masters Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She holds state licensure in California, Oregon, and with the NCCAOM. Her studies in Han Dynasty Classics influences her treatment strategies. Traveling to and working with healers from other cultures also informs her work.

“I always feel deeply cared for and nourished, my symptoms subside, and my chronic conditions have changed and healed over the course of our sessions.”

What to Expect

As a new patient allow 90 minutes for the initial visit. Follow-up visits are 60 minutes.

Treatment begins with an in-depth conversation to obtain an understanding of your medical history, symptoms, current and desired lifestyle. In addition to the conversation, Courtney will be observing tongue, taking the pulse, and checking areas of the body that are of concern. Lastly, the patient will lie down on the treatment table to receive acupuncture and one or more of the following therapeutic modalities:

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture utilizes a holistic approach of harmonizing the physiological processes in the body. Its antiquity has fostered global use and is acknowledged by and integrated into western medicine.

Japanese style often uses delicate needles with shallow insertion; sometimes the needles are not necessary at all. Other tools and techniques are available that can be utilized. Acupuncture can be used to reduce inflammation/pain, enhance organ system function, regulate emotional imbalances, and increase blood and lymph circulation, to name a few of its many health benefits.

MOXIBUSTION (MOXA)

Moxibustion (Moxa) is the burning of the herb Mugwort, also known as Artemesia Vulgaris. It can be burned in stick form, on the end of a needle, or directly at the site of needle insertion. It enhances the function of the acupuncture points and can also be used as an alternative to needles. Mugwort warms, dispels cold, relaxes the nervous system, increases blood flow and circulation, and tonifies vital energy (Qi) of an affected area which can include an organ or to stimulate the function of an acupuncture point.

GUA SHA

Gua Sha uses a tool with a rounded edge to apply pressure to the skin in a brushing motion to release musculoskeletal tension/pain/disorders, stimulate the lymphatic system, break up adhesions and stagnation, stimulate qi and blood flow, and increase circulation in the tissues. It can also be helpful for initial cold and flu symptoms.

CUPPING

Cupping uses glass cups and a small flame to create suction on the skin. The cups can either rest in a stationary position or be moved along an area of the body. This too treats early symptoms of cold and flu, increases circulation and blood flow, alleviates tension and pain, and eliminates toxins.

Electrical Stimulation

Electrical Stimulation is utilized in the Japanese method to relieve pain and increase energy flow in congested tissues and meridians.
